How to pack using the capsule wardrobe formula

This is what packing for my vacation used to look like.

I needed it aalllll. Had to have options, cause you never know what mood you’re going to be in or what you may feel like wearing, a girl needs choices.

I’ve purchased luggage while on vacation to get back home due to over shopping or not having what I needed packed from home and I’ve had to pull clothes out of my suitcase because it was over the weight limit and I was going to be charged. Stuffing your underpinnings into your purse at the airport is no way to live.

I’ve since developed a better way to pack. You guessed it, with a capsule wardrobe.

Now that the world is opening back up, you are going to be going places and may need a refresher on how to pack.

Even if you don’t have a capsule wardrobe that you dress out of, this is a great way to pack for vacation. It will give you more options with less clothing. And there will be room to bring home a thing or two that you pick up on your travels.

The basics

Similar to your 8 essentials in a capsule wardrobe, you need to identify some neutral basics that you will re-ware. For the purposes of this post, I’ll pack the following: 2 pairs of shorts, 3 dresses, 2 skirts, and 5 tops. The example below shows you what this would look like. From this set of clothes, you can create 20 outfits before you even change things up with accessories.

Pops of color to make things different

I’ve decided to go with red and blue for this trip. You see above I used these colors in my garments. The photo below shows items in these same colors that you can use to change up your look. All of these go with all of my essentials. By changing shoes, earrings and my purse, you can wear the same black dress but have a totally different outfit.

Additional items

Of course there are a few things that will be outside of the capsule such as your: bathing suits, cover-ups, pool shoes, undergarments, and workout wear including tennis shoes. These are more of the functional items needed to travel. But they won’t take up a bunch of space.

So that’s it. A successful packing job just takes some forethought. Plan out your neutrals, your color palette, and stick to it. It will be easier to get dressed when you’re there, you’ll have lots of options, without the exploding suitcase so you can just focus on relaxing and having fun.

I’m looking forward to hearing all about your travels this year.

I’ll never take vacation for granted again.
